Research: How to find HMO rental data

Back to all Research tutorials

PropertyData is the easiest way to quickly find HMO pricing and rental data through the whole of the UK.

If you're interested in comparing high-level HMO rental data for different areas, you can do this in our Postcode Data table.

Although it's not one of the standard columns, click 'Customise columns' to enable columns relating to HMO rent. (Remember that you can only have up to 10 columns showing at once.)

But when you want to delve deeper into HMO rental data for a specific local area, it's time to move on to our Local Data tool. Create a new area you are interested in HMO data for:

Once looking at the PropertyData dashboard, click to the 'Rents' tab and then the 'HMO room let' subtab

On the left-hand part of the screen, you will find HMO pricing data for the defined area, segmented by room type (double en-suite, double shared bathroom, single en-suite, and single shared bathroom).

In this example there isn't enough data to show a scatter plot for 'Single en-suite' rooms – this is quite common, as this is a pretty rare room type.

As always with PropertyData, each dot represents a live market data point, and you can click to view all the data we have on this room.

On the right-hand side of the screen, you will find some overall statistics about HMO rooms in the area - for example how many have include internet access, parking, or a communal living room.

This might guide you on the facilities likely to be expected by tenants from HMO rooms in a given area, or where gaps in the market exist.

If you like this data, you might also be interested in our HMO valuation tool, which can give you a sales and rental valuation for an HMO.
